Commercial Analyst - London - Commercial Analyst

We are looking for a Commercial Analyst to join our Finance team at our London headquarters, reporting to the Investment Manager.

The role supports the company's vessel acquisition, disposal and financing activity. Responsibilities include the preparation and maintenance of cash flow models for the existing fleet and for prospective investments, the monitoring of loan and lease facilities and their associated covenants, the maintenance of mark-to-market valuations across the fleet, the delivery of recurring and ad-hoc reporting, and the preparation of market research for investment presentations and memos.

The ideal candidate will have a quantitative background, strong financial modelling skills in Excel, and the ability to translate analysis into clear, actionable insights. Prior shipping experience is advantageous but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Investment Manager with ad-hoc projects and internal/external reporting
  • Loan/Lease Facility Monitoring
    • Create and maintain loan and lease amortisation schedules for Lomar's fleet, ensuring that amounts, rates and other information are up to date.
    • Check every schedule against the facility documentation and internal practice, so rates, amounts and terms tie back.
    • Update financial covenants and compliance undertakings whenever a facility is added or refinanced.
    • Monitor covenants and compliance undertakings alongside the Accounts team, and report to the Investment Manager.
  • Modelling & Monitoring
    • Build and maintain cash flow models for individual vessels and prospective investments, covering revenue assumptions, opex, drydocking, financing costs, residual value and other key assumptions and parameters.
    • Reflect financing structures accurately in the models — senior debt, sale-and-leaseback, and joint venture arrangements.
    • Run thorough scenario and sensitivity analysis, including break-even rates and downside cases at different market levels.
    • Consolidate vessel-level workings into portfolio and entity-level views, keeping assumptions consistent and reconciling across models.
    • Track actual performance against forecast once an investment completes, and explain what is driving the variances.
    • Turn model output into a clear recommendation the team can act on.
  • Recurring Reporting
    • Produce the recurring weekly and monthly reports for internal stakeholders and, where relevant, external parties.
    • Maintain mark-to-market valuation databases for the fleet, drawing on broker valuations and S&P reports.
    • Report weekly S&P transactions and key market data to the Senior S&P Executive and the Investment Manager.
    • Liaise across departments — Accounts, Operations, Chartering, Technical, and others — to gather the underlying data and commentary required for each report.
  • Market Research
    • Maintain the commercial and financial sections of investment presentations and memos, covering newbuilding and secondhand asset prices, time charter and freight rates, the orderbook, demolition, idle fleet, and the supply/demand balance.
    • Keep a running file of market reports, shipping indices and macro news the team can draw on.
    • Monitor the different markets for news relevant to live projects and investments.

Requirements

  • Sc in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics or any other strong quantitative background.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office, with advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics.

Skills

  • Highly numerate, with the ability to collect, organise and interpret large volumes of information accurately and to deadline.
  • Able to build financial models from scratch, and to pick up and work through models built by others.
  • Able to present findings and recommendations clearly to senior management, in writing and in person.
  • Able to work independently with limited management guidance, and to take ownership of recurring deliverables end to end.
  • Effective under pressure, with several reporting cycles running concurrently.
  • Able to identify recurring bottlenecks or data quality issues and propose process improvements to streamline future cycles.
  • Able to sense-check their own work and recognise when a result does not look right.
  • Discretion in handling confidential financing, valuation and transaction information.

Good to have

  • Exposure to shipping, offshore or another asset finance sector — from a shipowner, lessor, bank, broker or an audit background with shipping clients.
  • Familiarity with shipping data sources such as Clarksons, the Baltic Exchange, VesselsValue.
  • Python or SQL for pulling market data and automating recurring reporting; advanced VBA or Power BI are equally useful.
  • Working knowledge of ship finance documentation and standard sale contracts (Norwegian Saleform, BIMCO forms).
